New Puppy or Kitten? Here Are the First 5 Things You Need to Do

Welcoming a new puppy or kitten into your home is exciting, but it’s also a big responsibility. To ensure your new furry friend gets the best start, here are the top five things you need to do:

1. Schedule a Vet Check

The first step is to make an appointment with your veterinarian. Your puppy or kitten may not have had their initial vaccinations yet, which are typically given at 6 to 8 weeks of age. Your vet will:

  • Check their vaccination record.
  • Perform a full physical exam.
  • Discuss diet, exercise, socialization, behaviour, and the importance of pet insurance.

2. Consider Pet Insurance

Unlike us, our pets don’t have access to a public healthcare system, so it’s essential to plan for their health expenses. Research different pet insurance options, and consider coverage that suits both your pet’s needs and your budget. Look for policies that include GapOnly coverage, which allows you to only pay the gap, with the rest of the bill covered directly by your insurance at the vet.

3. Ensure a Proper Diet

Your new puppy or kitten may have come with a specific diet from the breeder. If you plan to change this diet, do so gradually over 3–5 days to avoid gastrointestinal issues like vomiting or diarrhea. Puppies and kittens have different nutritional needs from adult dogs and cats, so consult with your vet to ensure they are on the right diet.

4. Focus on Socialization and Behaviour

Like human babies, puppies and kittens go through a critical socialization period where they are most receptive to new experiences. For puppies, this occurs between 4 and 14 weeks of age, and for kittens, between 2 and 7 weeks. During this time, introduce them to new people, animals, and environments in a controlled, safe manner. Your vet can advise on the best approach based on your pet’s vaccination status.

5. Start Tick Prevention

If you live on the east coast, be aware that paralysis ticks are prevalent year-round, with peak activity from August to January. It’s vital to start your puppy or kitten on a tick prevention regimen, even if they stay indoors, as ticks can hitch a ride inside on your clothes or other pets.

Now that you’ve covered the essentials, it’s time to sit back, relax, and enjoy all the cuddles from your new best friend!
